Overview

Regardless of the medium or genre, professional communicators tell stories. An important piece is a depth of experience to draw on, to understand the world and make sense of it for an audience. Our project seeks to give communication students direct experience with diverse populations early in their college experience, so they can use that knowledge throughout their educations.

Students in Comm 110 (media writing),  220 (digital media convergence) and 350 (web publishing) will use research and an in-class speaker early in the semester to learn about a population served by a Burlington-based agency/program. They will visit the program in mid semester and meet, interact with and gather content from this community. The students will use this content to tell stories in multimedia formats including text, information graphics, still photos and video. This content will be presented in a website at Elon and will also be offered to the agency to use.

Structured reflection such as journals and class discussions will be used to engage student thinking on the stories that can be found in diverse communities and the need to consider and seek out diverse perspectives as a professional communicator. Students’ beliefs about the value of presenting diverse perspectives as a mass communicator will be sought at the start of the semester, at the end of the semester, and at the end of the school year. Members of the community being highlighted will also be asked to give feedback on the completed stories directly to students and for assessment.
