International Law works with the various forms of agreements between sovereign nations concerning commercial issues, the legal relationships of one government to another, prosecution and tribunals, and more. International Law attorneys are expected to have a general understanding in the functions, procedures, and precedent of the International Court of Justice, as well as countries, regions, or topics of specialty. An International Law attorney may, for instance, specialize in the interlegal relationships that define international law in Central America, and would thus represent parties who need protection under or against these laws.

Within International Law also lies the opportunity to work for international law firms, where the course of globalization has ensured stable, yet expanding job opportunities for attorneys. This is compounded by the comradery that International Law attorneyss share compared to other legal communities, where established attorneys remain supportive of novice attorneys and help to match attorney to case and cause.

Successful International Law attorneys also understand the limitations of law without direct authority or punitive support, and are comfortable using their creativity to articulate solutions that satisfy unique situations as they arise. In a way that is very much distinct from other fields, International Law attorneys are as instrumental in constructing new laws as they are in seeing that the laws are abided by.

Another facet that makes International Law relatively progressive compared to other fields is the International Law attorney’s emphasis on mutual accountability over punitive measures, operating on lofty ideals for humanity such as a collective morality that different communities accept and adhere to.In general, attorneys practicing in International Law can be characterized as both optimistic about intrinsic human integrity and realistic about what solutions, backed only by mutual accountability, can be effective.
