Plan of Action/Timeline

Our plan and timeline will be as follows.

August - October, 2011

Develop a reservoir of materials and resources that represent diverse voices in mass media and communications.  Some of these resources will be online, while others will be housed in the library.  Order and populate Belk Library with as many of these resources as budget allows (The Schools of Communications library budget will supplement our project).  Based on COM 100 course content and information from the literature review, this catalog will be divided into the following sections:

  • Mass Communications Theory and Research (including theories on Diversity)
  • Print Media/Journalism:  newspapers & magazines
  • Broadcast Media/Journalism:  radio and television
  • Film: narrative and documentary film
  • Online & Digital Media:  Internet, social media, mobile
  • Strategic Communication:  public relations and advertising
  • Teaching Approaches/Modules (existing modules from research)
  • Online Diversity Resources (sites such as Public Relations Society of America, LGBT Journalism Association, etc.)

By dividing the database by media/topic, our aim is to convey how diverse content can be incorporated into each and every area of the COM 100 course (and other courses as well), rather than approaching diversity as a stand-alone topic that can be “checked off” once completed.  The database will be developed into catalog form, with short notes on each resource and how it might be utilized.  (See appendix for sample catalog).

November – December 2011

Distribute the catalog to all COM professors with emphasis on those who will be teaching COM 100 in the spring 2012 semester.  Ask COM 100 professors to incorporate 2-3 materials each into their spring classes, with others incorporating materials where they can.

April – May 2012

Assess the impact that the resources/materials had on the professors teaching of the course content (see full assessment plan below) and write the final report.
