Effective storytelling is more than just writing for print — for any kind of writing professional. A strong writer will understand how to craft both a great piece of writing and a powerful image, and an even better one will understand the relationship between the two. It’s important for the writer to work in multimedia to stories where it’s appropriate, because a strong visual component can add depth to writing.

This can mean photography, videography, page design or even just formatting. The use of sub-heds in a news article, for example, will visually break up a story and allow the reader to understand that something new is being focused on. Similarly, a video that follows a source in a news article will allow the audience to place a face, voice and emotion to the name. A photograph can put a reader right in the scene being described, often adding weight to a moment by freezing it.

The strongest kind of digital writing can bring together all of these forms to create an effective multimedia project, and ultimately a better story. A writer that plans out a story will understand this and take photos and video that supplement the story and really add to what the reader is getting out of it.

A nonfiction visual storyteller must have a reporter’s keen eye for detail and accuracy, while employing creativity in imagery and style. The work I present here shows my ability to take photos, create long-form storytelling videos, build websites and design documents — as well as how each of these things work together to tell as stronger story.
