Research

Inquiry is a major part of writing that allows for insightful questions, thoughtful answers, and exciting content. While many writing assignments in the Professional Writing and Rhetoric major require inquiry, the two projects I’ve included in this section highlight a broad range of inquiry and showcase hands-on research of

people and places.

The North Carolina Highway 64 project required an extensive amount of planning and inquiry. Without knowledge of research techniques such as how to form interview questions and take effective notes, the articles I wrote for the Highway 64 blog would be less in-depth and informative. Learning about inquiry through travel writing was an exciting opportunity to experience something new while applying knowledge developed in the classroom.

The Back Cover is the Elon University English Department Newsletter that highlights events, research being conducted by professors, and other news in the department. To write the newsletter, I interviewed a professor, interviewed two students, and attended and reported on an event. These were all forms of research that needed to be put into the format and layout of the newsletter. Writing The Back Cover was an opportunity to think about visual design and how it affects an audience’s ability and willingness to read a document. Writing the newsletter was an opportunity to learn how to balance writing and visual rhetoric effectively by breaking up large blocks of text with white space and visuals.
