Introduction

My decision to declare as a Professional Writing and Rhetoric major was of course impacted by my competence as a writer. I have a solid grasp of how subleties of language are highly formative of an audience's reception. This skill manifests across genres (a strong professional writer is adaptable) but my particular talent is academic writing; my analytical essays are especially strong. As evident in "Refuting Binary Social Concepts in Art History and Feminist Critique on If on a winter's night a traveler", I am comprehensive and insightful when expanding on a thesis. I exhibit dextrous language skills as I shift my style to suit the given prompt, audience, or purpose.

It is this mutability that I would most like to emphasize; readers can see that I can retain my performance level in a wide range of contexts. Throughout the various prompts I have been given as an undergraduate student, I have woven my personal interest in civil and political rights into a panorama of feminist and social justice essays across disciplines. In this way I have tailored my education in keeping with my pursuits. Professional writing is a mode which all fields utilize, and while I study as an undergraduate I can also practice for higher intellectual thinking.

The rhetorical principles of these essays are appropriate for a civil situation - one of three situations outlined in the Programmatic Goals and Assumptions of Elon's Professional Writing and Rhetoric program. Though academia threads this section together, the content of the pieces is applicable to writing for the purpose of civic responsiblity. In particular, "Gender Norms and Consequences in Contemporary Italian Families" engages with research methods to deliver a formal study on the actual landscape of gender equality in Italian society. The other pieces look more at how social constructs shape and are shaped by art and literature. This idea also harkens to the power of Professional Writing and Rhetoric to influence culture.
