PIM-NPI Scripts and Videos Narrative

Contextual Framework

In the summer of 2011 I did an internship for the telecommunications company Corning Cable Systems. During my time at the company they launched a new website that had updated features including an entirely new sign-up process, full product search-ability, and professional photos of the products. It was a huge step forward for the company, but it required some learning on behalf of their customers. Therefore, I was asked to write and film a series of tutorial videos to help with the transitional process. Overall, seven videos were created. I wrote every script, filmed all the footage, and edited the final drafts. I used the program Camtasia in order to record my screen and therefore walk viewers step by step through the process. In the end the videos were posted on the Corning Cable Systems website to assist customers.

Rhetorical Decisions

One of the most important things I evaluated when creating these scripts and videos was my audience, both primary and secondary. The videos themselves were being created for my primary audience, the customers who visit the site. However, as an intern, I repeatedly had to keep in mind my secondary audience, my employers, because the work I was doing needed to meet their standards.

My secondary audience required me to focus on my ethos, in order to successfully represent Corning’s ethos. The work that I was doing needed to be very professional and in many cases exceed Corning’s expectations. Therefore, I had other employees edit the scripts to ensure my grammar was correct, I re-recorded the videos multiple times to make sure I got the best take, and I paid very close attention to detail when editing the final cuts.

Since I was keeping my audience in mind while creating these it allowed me to focus on the job at hand, as well as my professionalism. I couldn’t simply whip up a couple of videos and call it a day. I needed to pay attention to detail to ensure that the guiding videos I put on the web (with my name and voice attached) were the most effective and professional I could do.

Final Thoughts

In the end I felt like I had spent valuable time learning how to use new software to create professional videos for a company that I valued. The rhetorical decisions that I made allowed for the final videos to be rhetorically effective for the customers visiting the site.

The feedback on the videos was very strong and allowed me to create new videos for other projects. Please see RSS Feeds in Critical Inquiry through Writing to see a video I was asked to do following the PIM/NPI videos because of the previous work I had done.
