Says: "I specifically looked at windows. The image of the reflected world in a window, includes the space in the window display, the distortion of the glass, the lights of the interior room, the reflected image of the person looking into the window, and the reflected environment behind the closest viewer. This layered observation was both visually complex and challenging to address. Conceptual complexity is led by the nature of modern Florence. Florence is a tourist trap. It combines extraordinary consumerism (think of aprons with the Michelangelo David printed on the front), with a rich history of Renaissance art, artifact and architecture. Layered upon this reality, is Florence’s identity as a place where Italians still live, where designers introduce contemporary fashion, and where people of faith find a spiritual pilgrimage site. These competing and combined concepts provide a rich visual experience and source material for art. Addendum: In 2021, Due to covid restrictions, I have been working with my concept in new ways. While I continue to develop the images of Florence windows, I’ve chosen to consider many reflective and layered surfaces. This group of paintings is created from a range of my travel photography. This includes the reflected and layered. images of water taken in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the windows of other locales, including Chicago, Illinois, and Lisbon, Portugal. Anne Simpkins "
