The power of communication, certainly through language, has the influence to make a certain group of people feel a certain way, or do a certain thing. Throughout my academic career thus far I have learned the power to inform through writing and the ability to use certain tools to accomplish this. The skill to understand an audience and tailor every aspect of a document to help contribute to the overall message can greatly influence an audience. Furthermore, becoming more invested in how to become an innovator and learning to be more creative with the ways in which I inform my audience, is rather important.

During my junior year I was invited to York College for the Naylor Research Workshop. Throughout my weekend I discussed ideas about professional writing and rhetoric and different aspects of these topics that interested me. I narrowed down my research topic to discuss how “good” writing is defined in other disciplinary fields other than English, and how these assumptions and beliefs are informed, and also impact students’ writing. Continuing through my junior year I worked with a professor within the professional writing and rhetoric field to further my research findings.

I was first introduced to rhetoric through one of my English courses, and professional writing and rhetoric soon became one of my majors. Rhetoric is not just the act of persuasion, but the ability to use tools, language, signs, and symbols to communicate ideas, messages, or concepts to a particular audience or environment. I have decided to include those inforgraphics that I have created throughout my English classes as a way to showcase how to creatively inform an audience.

I have also included a presentation that I created while I was a CUPID associate. The purpose of the presentation was to inform English majors on the importance of clients and how to interact with clients in a successful manner.

As a capstone project for Elon, I developed a website that discusses how rhetoric and law are interconnected. The website that I created explores different laws and how those regulations are enforced through different terms and languages that have been reinvented over time. The website was created to inform others about the misconceptions that occurring when attempting to understand the laws that restrict many.

I have had the opportunity to engage in research about fashion and understand the conversations that are occurring within the fashion field. I have been particularly interested in consumer trends and whether those trends actually affect the fashion industry. Throughout my junior semester I have complied different resources and different articles while learning more information about this topic. Completing my junior year I created an informative article where I have incorporated the research I have complied. This article is included in this section.
