Central Research Question

What effect does experiential based projects have on student self efficacy in my World History classroom?

Background

All students enrolled in a typical high school in North Carolina are required to pass World History, a course that typically begins at the first Ice Age and ends in the modern era.  Most students that take this course do so in the 9th grade.

Because of the scope of the course, I have noticed many students becomeing frustrated with World History and doing poorly in the class.  I chose to conduct my research on self efficacy based on these observations.

Goal of the Study

The goal off this study is to discover what effect, if any, experiential learning projects had on student self efficacy.  For the purposes of this study, self efficacy is defined as the belief that a student has that they are capable of performing specific skills at certain levels in order to achieve classroom goals.  This study should idealy lead to new teaching strategies that make high school freshmen more successful in their first history course.

Secondary Research Questions

  • What factors play into student self efficacy?
  • What is student self efficacy based on?
  • What methods of instruction have the biggest impact of self efficacy?
