I was 14 when Hurrican Katrina swept through New Orleans, nearly drowning it off the map.  I'm from Michigan. I'd never been further south than Elon here in central North Carolina.  But when the Kernodle Center called for volunteers to help residents in Bay St. Louis who - after 5 years - were still struggling with the aftermath of a class 5 hurricane, I knew I had to go.

 

Many houses have been built, yet many lives are still damaged. Jobs lost. Families torn apart. Family momentos all gone.
