About The Project

*Prompt*

While attending Elon during my first semester, I was enrolled in English 110, a core curriculum requirement. During this course, Professor Jean Schwind challenged her students to critically think about current gender roles and their prevalence in today’s media. We were assigned:

“Design a mini field research project that will help you to answer an interesting or important question about how gender influences media selection, interaction (evaluation or interpretation), or application (effects on daily life) of adolescents. Conduct your research, and then write a research report that presents and analyzes your findings.” (Schwind, “Field Research: Gender Roles and the Media”)

*Background for Project Selection*

Being a female myself, I knew that when researching I wanted to focus my project on how females are portrayed in modern media. I thought one good way to go about this was to compare a modern hit movie to a similar one from the past. I chose to focus on Disney’s new movie Frozen due to the strong feminine lead that ends up being the hero in the end rather then a male hero. I then picked an older Disney movie, Snow White, a movie that portrays women as weaker figures who need to be saved by men. I chose this to not only see how females are currently portrayed in the media, but also to look at how the portrayal of females has changed throughout the years.
