Context

I worked on the Elon Animal Rights Advocacy project with a group six individuals in order promote animal advocacy in the Elon and surrounding community. We created deliverables as well as presented our ideas to our professor. The project deleverables were not made solely in theory, but were published and handed out as planned.

Rhetorical Decisions

When addressing the current condition of animal ethics in the Elon area, we had to examine the main issues. First and foremost, there is a large problem with over-populated animal shelters. In order to address this, we decided to construct a website dedicated to animal volunteer possibilities in the local area. These included working at the nearby Burlington Animal Adoption Center to travelling to Mebane to engage with big cats and other exotic animals at the Conservators' Center. The website lists possible places to volunteer as well as provides links to interesting videos and media discussing animal advocacy.

We also contructed a facebook page to reach out to more students who were unaware of the current condition of animals in the Elon community. The facebook page was designed to present both informative and entertaining posts regarding animals and animal advocacy. We needed to keep it entertaining and interesting in order to keep the attention of facebook users and ensure likes and their return to the page. Furthermore, facebook allowed us to spread much more knowledge to students who were unaware of local animal volunteer opportunities. Many Elon students enjoy volunteering and, therefore, we felt we could draw heavily on this interest.

Lastly, we constructed a children's coloring book to hand out Elon Elementary students. These younger students clearly would not have the attention span to listen to presentations on the cause for animals. However, we believed that if we planted a seed for caring about animals early with these children then they would grow up to support the cause for animal advocacy.

Reflection

Looking back, I believe we were extremely successful in promoting animal advocacy within the Elon community. For a group of only six students, we were able to reach out to multiple audiences through multiple avenues. Understanding what means of communication is most effective for specific audiences is crucial if you wish to hold their attention and draw their support for a cause.
